 Pacific Rim Wine Competition
Held at the National Orange Show Events Center in Southern California, this annual competition has been setting standards for judging of fine wines since 1985. The Competition is a two-day event held in April where we collect thirty wine professional who conduct a blind evaluation of about two thousand wines. Results are e-mailed to participating wineries shortly after the judging concludes and result books are then printed and distributed.
Awards offered include: Grand Champion, Best Sparkling Wine, Best Red Wine, Best Rose Wine, Best White Wine, and Best Dessert Wine. A Best of Class is awarded to the specific wine classes, also awarded are Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. The Label Competition results in Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards in categories of Most Unique Label, Best Label Series, Best Individual Label and Special Recognition for that unique label that stands out.
The 2010 Competition will be a celebration of our 25th year. We are changing our format, rules and so much more. Our Competition has traditionally focused only on wines from countries that border the Pacific Rim of the World, in the past 25 years there has been an abundance of quality wines produced in countries previously excluded. We felt that these new producers were not receiving a fair introduction into our market therefore we are opening our Competition to include wines of the world.
Among the many other changes you will see include the reformulation of our Best Wine Awards. The Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon entries have traditionally outnumbered other white and other red wines by 5 to 1. In order to fairly evaluate all whites and reds, we have restructured our Best awards. We will now award a Best Chardonnay, Best Other White Wine, Best Cabernet Sauvignon, and Best Other Red Wine instead of the previous Best White and Best Red awards.
Our Grand Champions for the last few years include:
2009 Grand Champion
Jeff Runquist Wines
Barbera
2007
Cooper Vineyard
Amador County
2008 Grand Champion
Rancho de Philo
Triple Cream Sherry
Cucamonga Valley
While our Competition concludes in April, we continue with the joy of wine education throughout the year. We pour our Gold Medal and Best of Class wines at the five-day NOS Festival in May every year and then wrap up our education with a Wine & Food Under the Stars fundraiser event in October.
We encourage you to enter your wines and contact our Director Yolanda Daly if you have any questions.
