Vegas Champ shows skills at OSS Hornaday 100
San Bernardino (July 13, 2008) – Three time NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday came home to the
Orange Show Speedway to race in two main events on
Saturday night. The headline event was a 100-lap race
featuring the BSR West ASA Super Late
Models in which
Hornaday drove the #33 Blackjack Fireworks/Keller
Racing Engines sponsored Monte Carlo. It was another
champion however, that drove away with the victory.
2007 Las Vegas Super Late champion Dustin Ash took the
lead and held it for the entire 100-lap event. Colton
native David Ross tried in vain to catch Ash, but
couldn’t muster the speed. 2008 season points leader
Linny White moved through the field to take second
place in lap 96, but ran out of time in his pursuit of
Ash. After a fierce battle with Lakeside’s Rick
Chavez and Las Vegas native Ray Hooper Jr., Hornaday
was able to move up to 5th place, but mechanical problems sent him to the pits in lap 38 and he was
unable to finish the race.
Hornaday also made his debut in the Super Clean
Modifieds as they made their first stop at the
historic ¼ mile high banked oval of the OSS.
Fallbrook’s Mike Salm took the early lead and fought
off the advances of Tracy, California native Scott
Winters. Winters’
patience paid off halfway into the
75-lap event when a spin sent Salm to the back of the
field leaving Winters in the lead. Despite efforts
from Andrew Phipps and trophy dash winner Tim Morse,
Winters took the FerrariFarms.com Super Clean Modified
to victory lane. Hornaday snaked through the field in
an effort to move up to the lead, but was sent to the
rear of the field twice as a result of contact with
other drivers.
In an evening that featured first time winners in
each main event at OSS, Rookie of the Year candidate
David Glidewell turned in a winning performance in the
ASA Pro 4 division. La Quinta’s Keith Blomgren and
Glidewell’s brother Bryan traded the lead for 8 laps
until mechanical problems sent Bryan to the pits,
leaving David in the lead. Cabazon’s Chuck Becker got
past Glidewell, but surrendered the lead in lap 16.
David Glidewell held on to first and took his first
checkered flag in the NAPA/Riverside Recycling
sponsored Toyota Camry.
Kim Marzullo experienced déjà vu as the ASA
Factory Fours ran a 25 lap main event. Marzullo
battled with Bloomington’s Drew Reed and Riverside’s
Duane Blay to take the lead 8 laps into the 25-lap
event. Marzullo held the lead up to the last lap when
2007 Stock Pony Champion Jim Edmiston caused Marzullo
to spin coming out of turn four. Blay raced Edmiston
to the line and won his first main event in 2008 by
inches. It was eventually determined that, had the
race continued, Edmiston would have been sent to the
back of the field because of the contact with
Marzullo, giving Blay the clear win. Marzullo had
lost two previous main events in similar fashion
before finally winning on June 21st. Edmiston is also
a former Sport Truck champion who was running in the
Factory Fours for the first time.
Four Leno’s Rico Taco Inex Legends came out to
race as well on Saturday. Chase Catania and Broc
Murphy traded the lead until contact in lap 15 sent
both cars to the back of the field. El Cajon’s Brian
Tyczki (Tes-ka) got the lead on the restart and earned
his first win in the J & M Auto Body sponsored Legends
car.
