Stock Pony rivals involved in another close
finish at Orange Show Speedway
SAN BERNARDINO (April 7, 2007) –
Jim Edmiston stalked the leaders from the start and made his only try
for the lead a success by edging Jim Mardis by a nose in Saturday night’s
ASA Stock Pony main event at Orange Show Speedway.
It
was the latest in a series of close finishes for the past two class
champions and it gave 2005 champion Edmiston a 2-1 edge in wins over
the defending champion this season.
“It was a great race,” said Edmiston,
45, of Highland . “He’s done that to me a couple of times
so it feels good to get one for myself. I knew I had a good car. I just
needed to stay close.”
Mardis had taken the lead at the start of the 25-lap
race and held it until Edmiston was able to get the preferred inside
line exiting Turn 4 and win the drag race to the finish line by the
width of the front bumper on his Clearwater Pipeline Ford Pinto.
“The car wasn’t very good,”
said Mardis, 21, of Riverside . “It had a horrible push. I think
something in the front end broke. It wouldn’t turn. I was just
hanging on for dear life for 25 laps.”
In
the other main events run before a crowd of 1,601, Lakewood’s
Tom Smith made it 3-for-3 in the 30-lap Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8 main;
Richard Hooper of Rosamond drove his Dodge Intrepid to the win in the
35-lap BSR West Late Model feature; Darren Amidon of Santee won his
second Legends Cars main event in as many tries this season and 10-year-old
Tyler Fabozzi of Anaheim took the 15-lap Bandolero main.
Saturday night’s races were dedicated to Richard
“Dick” Fryer, who began attending races at Orange Show Speedway
in 1962 and missed only a handful of events over the past 45 years.
Fryer, of Colton , passed away April 2 and was laid to rest April 6.
He was 83.
Orange Show Speedway will be dark April 14. Racing
will resume April 21 with the Hype Manufacturing Super Late Models and
a Demolition Derby on the schedule.
