Speed Trucks, Figure 8s will share spotlight
Saturday at Orange Show
SAN BERNARDINO (July 11, 2007) –
The ASA Speed Truck Challenge returns to Orange Show Speedway Saturday
night (July 14) to help the quarter-mile oval kick off the second half
of its stock car racing season.
The
Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8s, BSR West Late Models, ASA Stock Ponys and
Leno’s Rico Taco Legends Cars will join the Speed Trucks as competition
resumes in earnest following a lull during which there was just one
night of racing in three weeks.
Ice chests are returning, too. Last week, officials
of the ASA-sanctioned speedway announced that spectators will be permitted
to bring coolers large enough to hold a 12-pack of cans into the facility.
No alcoholic beverages and no glass containers will be allowed, and
the coolers will be subject to inspection by speedway security personnel.
In addition, the first 500 spectators entering through
the main gate will receive free baseball caps, courtesy of Lucas Oil
Products.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. and racing gets under
way at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and
over), handicapped and juniors (13-16) and $2 for children (6-12). Active
military personnel and veterans with valid military identification are
admitted free of charge. Parking is $4 per car with entry through Gate
3 off Mill Street .
Those unable to make it to the speedway still can
follow the action with “Orange Show Speedway Live,” the
radio broadcast on KTTD (AM 1350) that begins at 8 p.m. and is simulcast
on the Internet at www.nixacountry.com.
A pair of winning streaks will be on the line in
the Speed Truck Challenge and Outlaw Figure 8 main events, with two-time
series champion Darren Young bidding for his fourth straight Speed Truck
win and Tom Smith chasing his ninth win in what thus far has been a
perfect season of Figure 8 competition.
Young, the series’ defending champion, finished
second to 15-year-old Randel King, of Riverside , in the 100-lap race
at the Orange Show Speedway March 17. He began his winning streak May
5 at Firebird Raceway in Chandler , Ariz. , won again June 2 on the
infield road course at California Speedway, and two weeks ago at Tucson
got the best of Rick Chavez, who leads the Hype Manufacturing Super
Late Model standings at Orange Show Speedway, and series points leader
Victor Pfluger.
Pfluger, 16, who has one win, takes a one-point lead
over Young into Saturday’s 75-lap feature.
Smith, 32, of Lakewood , has won in almost every
conceivable fashion this season. In the most recent race two weeks ago
he spun on the opening lap, but took the lead on lap seven and drove
away from his rivals. In addition to the eight main event wins Smith
has taken six heat races and set fast time on five occasions, and in
addition to being the favorite this weekend he’ll be the man to
beat July 28, when the winner will take home $1,500.
Smith’s success has enabled him to build a
36-point lead over Rusty Stewart with seven races to go, and he is not
alone in enjoying a comfortable position atop his class.
Defending BSR West Late Model champion Jim Conklin,
of Big Bear, has three wins and a 30-point lead over two-time winner
Dave Arce, but Arce is just two points ahead of Brian Malone, another
two-time winner. Jim Edmiston, bidding for his second ASA Stock Pont
title in three years, has five wins and a 32-point lead over June 30
winner Matt Goodwin, and Bree Brewer, of Riverside, has used four wins
in the past five races to build a 22-point advantage over Darren Amidon,
of Santee, in the Legends Cars.
