Super Late Models have a new points leader
with one race to go at Orange Show Speedway
SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 20, 2007) –
John Manke went into the evening hoping to keep his title hopes alive
and came out of it as the favorite to win his second championship in
three seasons at Orange Show Speedway.
Manke, of Ramona, took the lead in the Hype Manufacturing
Super Late Model main event when the green flag waved and stayed in
front to the checkered flag 50 laps later to get his third win of the
season. But more important than the win to Manke was an oil leak from
a broken rear end seal that forced Frankie Gould to pull off the quarter-mile
oval with 12 laps remaining.
Gould, who boasted a 10-point lead over Manke and
Rick Chavez when the night began, was running fifth at the time. He
finished 10th and dropped from first in the standings to third, behind
the two men who went into the evening just hoping to close the gap to
the leader.
Manke, who won the 2005 championship by 2 points
over Ron Overman, has 512 points to 506 for Chavez, of Murrieta, and
504 for Gould with the final race to come on Nov. 3.
Defending champion Glen Cummings finished second
in the race, falling back in the final laps after one futile attempt
at a pass with seven laps to go, and Travis Stockman got third. Chavez,
whose own car was badly damaged in the previous race, drove a Chevrolet
loaned to him by Aflac Factory Four driver Martin Huizenga, of Hemet
, and finished fourth, just ahead of fast qualifier Linny White, of
Fontana .
Cliff Conklin, of Big Bear, broke a three-man deadlock
atop the Street Stock standings by capturing his fourth win in eight
races. The victory over Jesse Cottrell, of Palmdale, and Kyle Meyer,
of Highland, left Conklin 8 points ahead of John Reiman and 12 up on
Bobby Dezarov, the other drivers who had shared the lead, going into
the Nov. 3 finale.
Reiman, of Rosamond, fifth and Dezarov, of Palm Desert
, seventh.
Eddie Secord, of Oak Hills, also drove a borrowed
car to finish fourth in the 30-lap ASA Pro 4 feature and all but clinch
the title with one race to go. Secord, who took the points lead Oct.
6 when previous leader Rex Lockwood did not race, will take a 46-point
lead over Chuck Becker II into the Nov. 3 finale, when a maximum of
50 points will be available.
Defending Pro 4 champion Don Minut, of Moreno Valley,
got the main event win, passing Tony Edwards at the halfway point and
holding off the Yucaipa driver to the finish, with Becker II third and
Secord fourth in a car owned by Tim Carruthers after suffering engine
problems to his own entry in practice.
Riverside ’s Mark Whitson finished off a championship
season by winning the first of a pair of 25-lap main events for the
Stock Cars USA class, then finishing second to brother Tom Whitson,
of Lake Elsinore , in the second main.
Benjamin Mahan, of Hesperia, won the final Jr. Mini
StocKar event of the season.
