National Orange Show cancels 4th of July
Fireworks, racing; Two drivers disciplined for their actions Saturday
night
SAN BERNARDINO (June 19, 2007) –
National Orange Show officials formally announced on Monday (June 18)
that the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Show and stock car races have
been cancelled.
NOS Events Center General Manager Dan Jimenez said
the decision was made with the best interest of the community in mind.
“The city is presenting a big, free Fireworks
Show at Arrowhead Credit Union Park just three-quarters of a mile away
from the National Orange Show Events Center , and we decided the community
would be served best by our being good neighbors and canceling our event.
“We know that people who have made our
races and Fireworks Show the focus of the holiday celebration for many
years will be disappointed, and we apologize for any inconvenience that
may result from the decision. But it would be foolish, and unfair to
the public, to have two shows going on in the same area at the same
time.”
Orange Show Speedway’s Hype Manufacturing Super
Late Models, ASA Pro 4s, Aflac Factory Fours and Stock Cars USA had
been scheduled to be in action July 4. There has been no decision on
whether or not those races will be rescheduled.
Speedway officials have taken disciplinary action
against the two Aflac Factory Fours drivers who were involved in a heated
verbal exchange with each other and with race officials in the infield
of the quarter-mile oval following a collision during a heat race Saturday
night, June 16.
Tony Dumont, driver of the No. 55 car, and Danny
Williams, the driver of the No. 27 car, both have been fined $50 and
placed on probation for the remainder of the season under rule 6-1.2,
which addresses “fighting, rough driving and other acts of violence.”
Williams also has been suspended for one race under
rule 1.20.1. That rule, addressing Driver/Crew Behavior, states that
“any driver or team member causing any disturbance on the grounds
of the Orange Show Speedway with any official or OSS employee may be
suspended for a minimum of one (1) event.”
In addition, along with the cancellation of the July
4 program, the Firestone Big Foot Show tentatively scheduled for June
23 has been cancelled by Clear Channel Motorsports, the event’s
promoter.
