Chad Schug wins thrilling Legends race while Tom Smith stays perfect at Orange Show Speedway

SAN BERNARDINO (Aug. 12, 07) – Tom Smith stayed perfect and Chad Schug got the perfect ending to the best race of the night Saturday at Orange Show Speedway.

Smith, 31, of Lakewood , overcame two early spins and the strong car of Jay Henson to win his 11th race of the season in the Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8 class. Schug, 20, of Oak Hills, won his second straight Legends Cars main event and third of the season when Gary Scheuerell bobbled exit Turn 4 on the final lap after a terrific six-lap duel between the two.

Scheuerell, 51, of Murrieta, had taken the lead on lap five of the 30-lap feature while Schug was working his way up from 13th on the starting grid. Schug accomplished that when he took second away from points leader Bree Brewer on lap 20.

Schug got the bumper of his Yamaha-powered 1937 Ford replica in front briefly with three laps to go, but Scheuerell quickly reclaimed the top spot and was in position for his second win of the season. But when he slid high exiting the final turn on the final lap, Schug charged through for the win and Brewer moved up a spot to finish second.

Smith, who started the evening by being the fast qualifier for the eighth time, won his heat race, but saw his main event win streak in jeopardy after spinning on each of the first two laps. It was his good fortune, however, that other in the seven-car field blew engines, broke parts and brought out numerous cautions.

That gave Smith time to overtake Henson and then pull away to win comfortably.

Brian Malone, of Grand Terrace, and Steve Smith, of San Bernardino, waged a race-long, 30-lap battle for the win in the BSR West Late Models with Malone holding on despite constant pressure from Smith, who had won here two weeks ago. Smith inadvertently bumped Malone twice, but never was able to get in position to attempt a pass.

It was the fourth win of the season for Malone, 39.

Jim Mardis got his third win of the season and his 19th in the past 35 races by running away with the 30-lap ASA Stock Pony feature. Mardis, who also set fast time, took the lead from points leader Jim Edmiston on lap 14 and drove away from the field.

There was a three-way tie for the Street Stock points lead when their 30-lap main got under way, but none of the three – Cliff Conklin, John Reiman and Bobby Desarov – were factors in the outcome after early spins forced Conklin to pit for a flat tire and left Reiman back in the pack. Hemet ’s Jesse Cottrell came out of the caution-filled event with the victory and Desarov, of Palm Desert , came out with a 4-point lead in the standings after finishing fourth to Reiman’s sixth and Conklin’s seventh.
